About
Hypersonic flight is broadly defined as flight speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound. The mission of the Hypersonics Laboratory at UC is to provide a forum for faculty, students and visiting researchers to improve the state of knowledge of all aspects related to the inherently interdisciplinary research area of hypersonic flight, including but not limited to, non-equilibrium aerothermodynamics and associated electromagnetic fields, materials response to high-enthalpy flows, propulsion systems, and navigation, guidance and control of hypersonic vehicles using novel theoretical, computational and artificial intelligence-based techniques. Our vision is to make foundational contributions to this area that can be transitioned to design tools/frameworks that are required to develop future hypersonic systems for advanced transportation and national defense. A second aspect of this laboratory is to prepare the next generation of researchers and technology leaders in hypersonics.
